Dear core group,

During the months of the exemption period I was intensely thinking about what contributions I could make for the group in the future, what the future cooperation would look like and if I would still be able to fulfill my duties as a member of the core group upright and binding. Unfortunately, I arrived at the conclusion that my trust for the majority of the group, the Board of Directors and the management is fundamentally ruined. “Say what you’re doing – and do what you say” is the simple formula after a relationship of trust is created. Lack of confidence is not an issue of luxury, but an essential, even existential threat for any community and its future. For my part, I unfortunately don’t see a useful way to any longer contribute my skills to this core group.

Therefore I terminate my core group membership in due form and time by June 30th, 2016.

As a member of the core group for over 20 years I am very grateful to have been able to contribute a small part to the great mission. They were stormy, but also very beautiful years. It certainly took a pioneering spirit to stomp a computer program out of the ground that can safely and reliably carry the message of the mission and what it stands for. Inseparable we stood long time side by side with sincerity, honesty and responsibility.  I would like to honestly thank all of you who have encouraged me in this task and who accompanied, supported, reassured and above all put up with me, with the words of Lord Alfred Tennyson:

We are not the force by far,
As long as that Earth and sky moves on,
So we are still what we are;
Glowing’ hearts, weakened by time and fate;
but strong in will to strive, to seek, to find.
And never to deviate.

(Translator note: This is not the exact translation of the poem)

I will complete all open assignments due by the period of notice and hand them documented to the core group. I assume that we organize the transfer of duties, as well as all the further details together. During that time I am open to further, active participation in programming matters within the scope of my possibilities.

Some words from the German newspaper ‘Die Welt’ (The World) on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day (May 3) which according to Stephan are related to the theme of their website:

Who can’t say what he thinks cannot bring others to think
When one cannot express his opinion then the popular opinion becomes doctrine
Who only accepts his own opinion doesn’t have an opinion, but an ideology
Who only says what everyone wants to hear doesn’t speak the truth
Who believes to know the absolute truth, doesn’t know enough
is always the freedom of dissidents

Spiral of Silence

Stephan points to the phenomenon of a spiral of silence, clearly implying a spiral of silence is present within FIGU.

The Spiral of Silence Theory is a political science and mass communication theory proposed by the German political scientist Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann, which stipulates that individuals have a fear of isolation, which results from the idea that a social group or the society in general might isolate, neglect, or exclude members due to the members’ opinions. This fear of isolation consequently leads to remaining silent instead of voicing opinions.
